A Place In Time eBook C A HOCKING

Our minds are fields of flowers growing wild in an array of colors symbolizing our complexities, and to understand why we as humans do things has been the endless debate for centuries. What I liked about this book was not simply a great story, but there is something real about it, something to learn about human life, human thought. Life breathes in these pages so real that I felt a part of the drama, mystery and intrigue.
I think the best part of the book is how the characters interact, how real the scenes are. Dan, a main character in the book, is slow to figure out what plagued him for so many years. He finally confronts the inner demons that blinded him for so long, and as I read I felt for him wondering if he really knew more, how he could miss it, but as our inner self protects our wellbeing in a complex relationship with our selves, Dan needed time and he got it in a twist of Time Travel.. I loved that part!! I shall not say further and risk writing spoilers.. The book was excellent and I will read everything C. A. HOCKING writes. Cheers to a FIVE STAR BOOK.

A Place In Time eBook C A HOCKING Reviews

A Place in Time is a great story about finding truth and closure, and moving on. While time travel is the vehicle, I wouldn't classify this story as science fiction; it's more of a character-driven suspense story. At about 150 pages, it was a nice, quick read, and I read it in one evening.

I was pretty sure I knew how it would end, but the characters were interesting, so I wanted to keep reading to find out how it played out and how the characters were going to react to certain things. The major plot points, especially at the end, were just as I thought they'd be, but I never got bored because there were enough surprises and unanswered questions along the way that kept my interest.

The book was edited well, and typos were refreshingly scarce--the few I found I could count on only one hand. The dialogue was well-written also. Even during some of the longer monologues, I never got the sensation that the character should be running out of breath by now.

The only thing that bothered me (but just a little) was that it took the protagonist so long to figure who the stranger was. I understand his hesitancy to believe it, but I think he should have at least had a fleeting suspicion, especially during the lunch scene, but it didn't seem to cross his mind at all. So for a little while, I was thinking Is Dan really that slow? Or is it that the author thinks I haven't figured it out yet and doesn't want to `give the surprise away'? But it didn't bother me enough to keep me from enjoying the story.

The story flowed well, kept a nice pace, and had a nice mixture of action, dialogue, inner dialogue, and narration. It was written mostly from the protagonist's point of view, but did include glimpses into other characters' thoughts and feelings, as well. These glimpses never came across as head-hopping though, like I've seen in some other novels. I don't remember ever needing to re-read anything to figure out who was talking/thinking.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories centered around character drama and suspense. I will be reading the author's other novel very soon, and look forward to more from her.
If there was one moment in your life that you, as the person you are now, could go back and influence (specifically to ensure that you could still end up as the person you are now), what would that moment be? And what if in that moment you discovered/remembered the very secret you'd buried and forgotten? I completely enjoyed reading this story. I kept wanting to go further; to discover more about that fateful moment in the main character's life. This story does not disappoint with its creativity, originality and imagination.
...but failed to keep the momentum all way through. I was intrigued by the storyline so I ordered a sample, which was pretty good. I then ordered a copy, and the rest of the book wasn't nearly as good. Some parts were interesting, but other parts were decidedly uninteresting and unpolished. Some of the dialogue between mother and son is "off", as though it was a mother speaking to her young son instead of the grown man the character is. This wasn't a really bad book, but I suspect a good editor could have helped to turn this into a very good book. As it stands, something is missing, although I'm not exactly sure how to describe what that something is. I should have been more emotionally involved with the main characters, but I wasn't. I was more of a "partially interested bystander", if that makes sense.
I just finished reading "A Place in Time". I got this as a free book from for and had no idea what it was about and finally got around to reading it. I was surprised at the story unfolded and was instantly drawn in. This book has lots of unexpected twists and turns, well written and loved the characters as well. It's not your average mystery. If you like mysteries with a touch of paranormal to them then this is a book to read. I will definitely be buying the author's next book.
Written by an Australian writer, this little crime novel surprised me to be much more than I had expected. A 40-year-old man suffers depression every year on his birthday since he witnessed his father's murder by a stranger when he was 11 years old. Now living in England, after much therapy and having the financial means he and his mum go back to Australia, to the scene to either jog his memory or at least put the past to rest. A well-written and engrossing read. Not what I had expected as it ventures off into a realm of magical realism which must be worked out as the story progresses. If you like your crimes to take place fully in the real world, this won't be for you. Otherwise, it is an intriguing look at when powerful emtions collide in space and time. Whether the story involves time travel or something more mystical it is a lovely story of a family, mother and son, rescued from a life of abuse. Lovely writing. I'd certainly try the author again.
