Ruth loves nothing more than curling up in front of the telly with a family-sized bar of chocolate. She doesn’t do diets and she certainly doesn’t do exercise. But all that changes when she’s invited to her school reunion.

Bullied at school for being overweight, Ruth’s first reaction is to rip the invitation into a million pieces. But then Ruth hatches a plan. She’ll lose the weight and arrive at the reunion looking gorgeous and glamorous, leaving her old classmates in awe. Especially her former crush, Zack O’Connell.

With the help of her friends and a new, unbelievably hot colleague, Ruth begins her transformation. With six months until the reunion, losing weight will be a piece of cake, right?

A Beginner Guide To Salad An uplifting laugh out loud romantic comedy Beginner Guide Book 1 edition by Jennifer Joyce Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

With this book, Jennifer Joyce shows that she is an amazingly talented writer, and I eagerly await any future creations she has in store. This book was so good that I read it in one sitting; I literally couldn't put it down because I was drawn into it so much! It takes one heck of a book to make you plug your dying e-reader into the wall, sleep be damned, just so you can journey further into the wonderful world of these characters.

It really does have something for everyone. I guarantee readers will identify with one or more of the characters in many ways. Maybe there's a bit of Ruth, Billy, or one of the others in you. Maybe you know a Jared, Erin, or have the unfortunate task of working for a Kelvin. They feel like real people and it's so wonderful to visit with them... people you'd love to have as friends and family... and others you'd want to stay as far away from as possible (I'm looking at you, Kelvin!). No cookie cutter, boring, or cliched stuff here, folks. This is writing filled with heart, humor, heartbreak, you name it.

Like I said, there's something for everyone, folks. I found myself smiling happily and laughing hysterically quite a bit, and also crying heavily in other places. It's very rare to see a writer so gifted with writing both humor and sadness; this book is truly an emotional experience that brought me so much enjoyment and touched my heart and soul deeply.

I also really enjoyed seeing the world from the points of view of several characters, rather than just one, and Jennifer Joyce writes so well that you're never confused as to who is telling their parts of the story. There are no jarring transitions, and you'll easily feel like you're in the shoes of each character. The same event can really be different seeing it from more than one perspective, as you'll see... and it's great to know what is going on inside everyone's heads as we go on these journeys with them.

I could see this book being adapted into a television series or feature film, too. It's that well-done! And definitely don't forget about the prequel to this book, "A Beginner's Guide to Christmas." I read that before this one, and fell in love with the characters and this fictional universe that I was ready to jump into "Salad" right away. Also, hopefully we'll have a chance to revisit Ruth and the others in the future, too, and see how they're doing. It would never be tiresome to revisit this world Jennifer Joyce has created, that's for sure.

As an adult male, I'm probably not the target audience for a romantic comedy. Really, though... this book is so much more than that. It's a wonderful, emotional experience with lots of heart, love, laughs, tears, and every emotion under the sun... and I absolutely give it my highest recommendation. This is one delicious "Salad" that everyone will love!

10/10; 5 Stars; A+; Absolute Perfection
I’m such a huge sucker for books with plus sized heroines. I’ve been kind of struggling with my weight too, especially now after having my second child. But I guess we all want to read stories where the MC is going through some similar experience, and after reading the blurb I knew I HAD to read this book.

First off, I’d like to point out this is a debut, but I was pleasantly surprised with the writing. It’s told from different point of views, which sometimes doesn’t work for me. But Jennifer’s writing skills are excellent and the stories didn’t feel disjointed at all. There was some repetitiveness yes, but it all worked fine in the big picture.

I was also mesmerized by the MC, Ruth which reminded me a lot of Jane Green’s Jemima J (just a happier version). It might seem childish to want to lose weight just to be all gorgeous and sexy for a high school reunion, but I could understand Ruth. She’s been through hell in her teenage years, being called names, laughed at, bullied – all because of her looks. I sympathized with her and even had my eyes teary while reading some of the things she went through at school. Stuff like this shouldn’t happen to anyone, yet I know there are many teenagers going through the same experience. And Zack! That son of a bitch who broke her heart, mocking her the worst way possible! I swear to god, I felt like slapping my kindle…he was such a bastard.

Anyway, I didn’t slap my kindle, but I did however scream – YOU MORON! Thankfully, no one was around at the time I was reading it.)

But back to my lovely Ruth now. She’s nice, caring and living with two housemates, who are very unique and oh so different as characters. Billy and Theo, they were so much fun, though Theo was sometimes very annoying.

This was indeed a very fun journey and if I could have a BFF as in BEST FICTIONAL FRIEND Ruth would definitely make the top of that list. She’s so sweet and so well portrayed, I felt as she was next to me while reading. Telling me all about her numerous attempts to lose weight, encouraging me to maybe try one out.

I laughed out loud on some parts, I had teary eyes the next moment, but overall, this is a book that spoke to my heart and I’m so happy I read it. It’s uplifting, well written story with characters you can relate to. The romance part is built gradually and I love how things turn out in the end.

At the end of the book, the author says it was Ruth who made her start going to the gym. Well, I’m not a fan of gyms, but I did start a new diet. I think Ruth would be very proud of me.)
Slow, but okay. The story was told in multiple viewpoints that didn't seem to forward the plot.
This was a sweet story.
